The Eleventh, New York
In October 2016, the architects Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG) unveiled designs for a pair of twisting towers to be located in the Chelsea neighbourhood of New York City.
The project, called 'The Eleventh', is similar to other BIG residences in Miami and joins a swathe of new developments in the area that includes projects by Zaha Hadid, Renzo Piano and Jean Nouvel.
The design is intended to ‘skew traditional skyscraper geometry’ while also paying homage to New York’s classic modernist structures.
The surrounding historic industrial buildings and the nearby Meatpacking District is referenced by the stone and metal facades of the two structures. They will reach heights of 122 m (400 ft) and 91 m (300 ft), and offer 360-degree views of the High Line, the Hudson River and Manhattan skylines.
The real estate development and investment company HFZ Capital Group will open a luxury 137-room hotel and spa inside the tower. Above this there will be private luxury homes. The taller west tower will be dedicated to condominium residences. Friends of the High Line are collaborating on a public open-air pedestrian promenade that will run adjacent to the elevated High Line.
In August 2018, the first of the scheme's two twisting High Line towers topped out. The project is scheduled for completion in 2019.
